Symbols in Waze and their meaning

Waze describes itself as a community-based navigation and transportation app. Essentially, it is a social network of maps and GPS applications.

Users share real-time traffic information. Waze symbols are used to inform users of what is happening and, if you are not familiar with them, we will mention what they mean.

With Waze, you can understand if there is an accident, if there is police activity, if there is a petrol station nearby, etc. through the symbols on the map.

It is an excellent navigation tool, so when you download it and open it for the first time, you may see many icons and symbols you are not familiar with.

Meaning of symbols in Waze:

The Waze icons you see on the map will remind you of certain situations. Options include:

Traffic

Red icon, three cars lined up in a row. This option informs you about traffic jams.

Police

A blue icon with a police officer. This option informs the user that the police are nearby.

Accident

A grey icon of two cars colliding. Obviously, this symbol is a way of reporting vehicle accidents on the road. It alerts wazers to situations involving collisions or other accidents.

Danger

The orange icon provides a hazard warning. It is a way of reporting road hazards along your route, such as potholes or high speed bumps.

Petrol station (Price)

Gas station icon with some coins. This is a useful little feature that helps Wazers understand the price of the gas station you encounter on your route.

Chat

This option provides a forum for you to chat with other users.

Map error

This great feature is very useful, as it allows you to find errors where most GPSs fall down. This option allows you to report problems with the map in a specific area, such as missing roads, exits or bridges.

Place

Purple icon. Allows you to take a photo of a place on the map so that other users can recognise it when they find it.

Camera

Blue camera. This icon can provide other users with images of road conditions, obstacles and other hazards.

Road closure

Barrier icon on orange background. Allows you to select a specific road on the map that has been closed. If someone else reports that the road is closed, Waze will provide the driver with a route around the road obstacle.

Roadside assistance

Can’t change a flat tyre, low water levels, need help? With the “Help on the road” icon you can request help from a Wazer partner or a professional to help you. Once you select this option, a fellow Wazer or external partner will see your request and location on the map.

Debug

Icon used by Waze developers to be able to test and find problems with the app.

Unknown

Do you know what this icon is about?

All of these options allow Waze users to learn more specific details to provide the most up-to-date and accurate information possible.
